And the winners are...
From an egg-specialty restaurant to a windmill-manufacturing company, to an e-commerce business in the healthcare sector, the contestants came from all walks of life.
The competition was fierce, and the contestants charged up. In the end it all came down to 202 student startups competing for the coveted ‘Top 5 Student Startup’ title.
Two parallel contests were held as part of TATA First Dot: One was the Online People’s Choice Competition, which allowed the public to vote online for their favourite start-ups; and the other, the Judges’ Choice Competition.
During the Judges’ Choice Competition, all nominations were vetted by a panel of expert judges to identify a shortlist of promising 25 startups, based on the market opportunity they tapped, their business model, and growth potential.
Each judge individually reviewed the short-listed companies, and then discussed briefly each of them. Post discussion, each judge individually rated the company on a scale of 1 to 4. The event organizers subsequently collated the scores of the individual judges for every company and ranked in order of total score received, to determine the five winners. The names of these five winners will be announced during the Award ceremony at the TATA First Dot event in Chennai on January 10, 2012.
The Online Competition was a straightforward public voting contest, and the five start-ups with the most votes emerged as winners.
